2018 will be the biggest year yet for Construction and Engineering talent across New South Wales

WestConnex Motorway – NSW

The $16.8 billion WestConnex Sydney motorway project will eventually connect two of Sydney’s main motorways – The M4 & M5. The project has more than 2000 staff delivering the works, with the M4 estimated to open up a further 4000 roles and the M5 gearing up for 6000. This will also include hundreds of apprenticeships and trainee positions for those looking to make their first move into the industry.

NorthConnex Tunnel – NSW

NorthConnex is Australia’s largest tunnel construction project in history, offering an easier route between the M1 Pacific Motorway and The Hills M2 Motorway.

The project was so extensive it led to the opening of the ‘NorthConnex Training Hub’, providing locals with the opportunity to launch or refine their careers with specialist in-house training facilities. According to www.northconnex.com.au, “1 in 5” NorthConnex workers are supported through an apprenticeship implemented by the Training Hub.

Sydney Light Rail – NSW

Sydney’s Light Rail operation began in 1997 with the creation of the ‘Inner West Light Rail’, designed to replace Sydney’s former tram network. The CBD and South East Light Rail portion of the project is under heavy construction, with further extensions, including NSW’s latest infrastructure project ‘Parramatta Light Rail’, in the works.

With an expected completion date of 2024, the demand for Electrical, Mechanical and Construction resources will continue way further than the The Light Rail will require an enormous stream of maintenance and operational talent to keep the 2.1 billion dollar project ticking along.

Pacific Highway Upgrade – NSW

The Woolgoolga to Ballina section of the Pacific Highway Upgrade will remain under construction until 2020, totalling a cost of 4.36 billion dollars and demanding skills from those living in country New South Wales or willing to relocate.

At the beginning of April, The Northern Star reported via their website, www.northernstar.com.au the need for 2400 workers to join the project. It’s a perfect opportunity for locals living in rural spots to undergo training programs, develop their skills and get involved in one of NSW’s largest road infrastructure projects to date.

With 155-kilometres left to upgrade, the level of opportunity will only increase.

Sydney Metro Twin Tunnels – NSW

With Stage 2 of the Metro Twin Tunnel project kicking off after the completion of Stage 1 in 2016, the on-going requirement for tunnelling and civil construction professionals continues, with the official website encouraging trainees to dive in. The opportunities presented to those with little experience has never been higher in NSW, and the efforts of the government to support those new to the industry will undoubtedly lead to less of a skills shortage across the nation.

Barangaroo – NSW

The stylish inner-Sydney suburb of Barangaroo continues to grow, with the final part of the ‘Barangaroo Urban Regeneration Project ‘ to finish up in 2024. With an emphasis on sustainability and a commitment from the NSW Government to abolish waste emission in the area, it promises to accommodate over 25,000 people, both in professional and residential environments.

According to www.theurbandeveloper.com, the project will create roughly 23,000 jobs in multiple industries, including construction, electrical, mechanical, retail and tourism.
